7th HbbTV Symposium and Awards 2018 in Berlin
HbbTV will be a key element of the new hybrid broadcast and OTT platforms currently being prepared by major European public and commercial broadcasters in countries such as Germany, France and Spain after similar moves in the UK and Italy for instance. This was confirmed by representatives of the involved broadcasters at the 7th HbbTV Symposium and Awards, co-organised with Deutsche TV-Plattform, which took place on November 14-15, 2018 in Berlin under the theme Growing Value Through HbbTV.

World’s first commercial deployment of the HbbTV Operator App by Panasonic
The specification enables end users to access the full TV service bouquet (live and on-demand TV) of German TV platform HD+ on any 2019 Panasonic OLED UHD smart TV sold in Germany, without the need for any additional hardware or smartcard. In this case, consumers will navigate through the HD+ TV channels and interactive services through an HD+ branded user interface.

HbbTV Webinar: Overview and application examples
The first webinar of this new series hosted by the HbbTV Association gives an overview over the background and core technical concept and elements of HbbTV. It introduces the set of currently available HbbTV specifications and their areas of application.
The current status of HbbTV in the market is described and a number of practical examples illustrates the wide range of HbbTV services which are offered in practice today based on the toolbox provided by the HbbTV standard.

Technology and broadcast groups team up to develop HbbTV
A consortium of broadcasters and technology companies including French broadcasters Canal Plus, France Télévisions and TF1, Germany's Institut für Rundunktechnik, satellite operator SES Astra, UK-based IPTV technology company ANT and US-based technology provider Open TV have formally teamed up to launch and develop a specification to harmonise the delivery of content via the internet to connected TVs and set-top boxes. German RTL to support HbbTV
The German broadcaster RTL will introduce a new text service using the Hybrid Broadcast Broadband TV (HbbTV) standard. It will launch the service, called HD Text, next year. (Broadband TV News)
MacAvock: EBU must harmonise hybrid TV

Channel 4 and Talk Talk weave into Canvas
Project Canvas has announced that Channel 4 and, significantly, internet service provider TalkTalk have signed up to the connected TV project. The six partners, which also include BBC, ITV, Five and BT, will now seek intentions of interest from other potential partners. (Broadband TV News)

Korea reveals new hybrid TV platform
